Temple Sholom Cemetery

Temple Sholom is a Reform Jewish congregation serving greater New Milford and the Housatonic River region of northwest Connecticut.

Fulfilling a growing desire of our congregants to provide a Jewish burial for their loved ones, the Temple Sholom Cemetery was dedicated in 1992.  Comprised of a separate, well-defined area within New Milford’s Center Cemetery, Temple Sholom Cemetery offers a sun-filled dale shadowed by the Litchfield Hills where members of our Community may lay their deceased loved ones to rest near to their home.  Member’s spouses, children, grandchildren, parents, brothers and sisters are welcomed.  Others may be accommodated upon permission from the Cemetery Committee.

Comprised of over 1000 grave sites, many of which are in a central plaza area that will in the future be developed into a park-like setting with pathways, trees and benches, Temple Sholom Cemetery offers single, double and multiple grave sites to Temple Sholom members, Jewish relatives, and – with limited restrictions – to non-Jewish spouses.

Some questions repeatedly arise.  It is hoped that this information will help you to understand the functioning of Temple Sholom Cemetery and how to benefit from careful pre-need planning to minimize the impact of a loss upon surviving beloved friends and family.

Where is Temple Sholom Cemetery?

It is located within Center Cemetery on Route 202, across from the New Milford Hospital.  Open year round during daylight hours, the Temple Sholom Cemetery is in the north portion of Center Cemetery, surrounded by a stone wall.

Why is having a place to visit so important?

Survivors appreciate having a place on which to focus their memories of the deceased.  Visiting the cemetery often helps to bring closure and allows healing to progress.  Moreover, interment is a dignified way to honor the life of a departed loved one.  Traditional burial or burial of ashes are appropriate.  Vaults are mandatory.

Can I change my mind later?

Temple Sholom Cemetery will repurchase your unused grave rights at the original cost to you minus that portion of the fee that is dedicated to perpetual care, and less any applicable administrative charges in effect at the time.  Grave rights may only be resold to the Temple Sholom Cemetery, that may itself then resell the rights to another.

My spouse is not Jewish.  Can we be buried together?

Yes, non-Jewish spouses are welcome.  However, only Jewish services may be performed at graveside.  We do ask, too, that symbols of other religions not be displayed within the confines of Temple Sholom Cemetery.  The Rabbi of the Temple officiates at all services within the cemetery unless other arrangements are requested and approved in advance.

Are memorials permitted?

Memorials are permitted, markers are required.  The Cemetery rules guide size and placement, depending upon the size  and location of the grave site.  Some sites permit low stones only.  Please ask for a copy of the current rules for more information.

Is there a payment plan?

Yes.  Temple Sholom Cemetery offers a convenient plan whereby you may elect to pay over a period of three years.  Fifty (50%) percent is due at the time of purchase.  An additional twenty (20%) percent is payable on the first and second anniversaries of your purchase.  The final ten (10%) percent is payable on the third anniversary.  However, the purchase must be paid in full before a grave is used.

How do I know the site will be there when I need it?

Temple Sholom Cemetery purchases your grave site rights from Center Cemetery, and pledges its full faith and credit to maintain the dignity and integrity of the premises.  It is Jewish law and tradition to do so.

Do I receive a deed to the land?

No.  When you purchase a grave site you purchase the right to designate who will be buried there, the use of the site for burial purposes and the right to place a memorial on it.  The land itself remains the property of the Cemetery.  You will receive a certificate spelling out your rights in the site or plot you have reserved.

How do I reserve a grave site?

Simply call the Temple office at 860-354-0273.  We will gladly assist you to visit the cemetery or view a site map and to make an appropriate and convenient choice.

Other Rules

Except where required by ritual of the Jewish faith as determined by Temple Sholom’s Rabbi, we must follow the rules of Center Cemetery.
