Education

photo-education at Temple SholomTemple Sholom’s Education Program provides an alternative to conventional religious school.  For over a decade, we have moved beyond traditional graded curriculum and classroom settings in favor of cooperative, community-lead, team-based programming. The Jewish Journeys…program includes Tuesday afternoon Hebrew instruction and Sunday morning affective educational programming that examines all aspects of Judaism. The Sunday program is open to all members of the community as either student learners or adult Teaching Team members.  The study of Hebrew is customarily begun in second grade.  Over the course of time, students encounter all subjects found in traditional religious school curriculum.

Education at Temple Sholom is guided by the Torah principle of N’aseh V’nishma, we will do and thus come to understand.  On Sunday mornings, community members gather for learning that comes in the form of activities, journal writings, art, crafts, games, and stories designed to illuminate a particular area of Jewish life and tradition.  Our children and adults learn together in small group settings.   Units of study usually last from three to seven weeks.  All families are expected to volunteer in the program and take an active part in the life of the Education Department.  Jewish Journeys…believes that if adults model their commitment to Judaism, they will create families more committed to understanding the role of Jewish identity in their lives.

It is our goal to help parents fulfill their Torah mandated responsibility to educate their children, V’shinantam l’vanecha.  Our philosophy supports the transmission of Jewish values L’dor Va’dor, from Generation to Generation.
